After starting the season with two consecutive victories, the men of RSL were looking to keep their win streak alive as they took on the San Jose Earthquakes in their second home match of 2021. Heading into the match, the team’s confidence was high. “The vibe just keeps getting better,” said Homegrown defender Justen Glad.

Head coach Freddy Juarez made a few changes to the lineup after defenders Everton Luiz Aaron Herrera, Marcelo Silva, and forward Anderson Julio were all sidelined due to injury. Defender Erik Holt earned his 2021 debut while Andrew Brody & Justin Meram also received their first starts of the season.

A quiet first half turned into a RioT in the 43rd minute when Rubio Rubin scored a picture perfect bicycle kick, giving the home side a 1-0 lead heading into the second half.

The throw-in from Homegrown defender Donny Toia was flicked on by Damir Kreilach & the rest is all over the internet. ESPN FC, Bleacher Report, Fox Sports, and others quickly hopped on the Rubio Rubin hype train … making his goal viral & cementing him as the early favorite for MLS Goal of the Year.

In the 72nd minute, MLS all-time leading goal scorer Chris Wondolowski entered the match for San Jose and made an immediate impact. In a total of seven minutes, he flipped the match on its head by scoring two goals, leading the Quakes to victory.
