On November 22, 2009, RSL featured in its first-ever MLS Cup Final after a miraculous underdog run to claim the Eastern Conference Championship to face the star-studded LA Galaxy for the Phillip F. Anschutz trophy. In the first half, the Galaxy struck first through Mike Magee before RSL striker Robbie Findley leveled the score in the second half. The match proceeded to overtime where the deadlock was never broken, signaling penalty kicks to decide a champion. RSL ultimately prevailed 5-4 in the sudden-death shootout behind two saves from goalkeeper Nick Rimando and a seventh round strike from defender Robbie Russell that sent the RSL faithful into pandemonium and for the first time, champions.
